Seedance 2.5 is ByteDance’s new flagship AI video model, officially launched on July 31, 2026: it generates a single native clip up to 30 seconds long in one pass, can extend that twice, and accepts up to 50 multimodal reference inputs. The release happened in two steps — a preview at the Volcano Engine FORCE conference on June 23, 2026, then the official launch post dated Jul 31, 2026 on ByteDance’s Seed blog index at seed.bytedance.com/en/blog, with same-day TechNode coverage. Consumer access is open: the Dreamina product page still reads “New model LIVE: Dreamina Seedance 2.5 is now available” on our August 6, 2026 re-check. API access is open too, but through a third party first — Runway’s API changelog dated August 7, 2026 states “Seedance 2.5 (seedance2_5) is now available via the Runway API”. ByteDance’s own BytePlus catalog added a Dreamina Seedance 2.5 card stamped “Updated Aug 7, 2026”, with no model ID we could read off it on August 8, 2026.
This is a fast-moving news story. Below is what is confirmed, what is still third-party reporting, and what we will test ourselves as soon as we get access.
What Happened
Two dates matter.
June 23, 2026 — the preview. ByteDance introduced Seedance 2.5 on stage at the Volcano Engine FORCE conference in Beijing (reported by The Decoder, June 23, 2026, and TechTimes, June 24, 2026; data checked 2026-07-17). The demo was framed as an enterprise beta, not a general release. At the same event, ByteDance also upgraded Seedance 2.0 to native 4K with 10-bit color depth — a significant free bump for existing users, and one that makes some of our own earlier “up to 2K” descriptions outdated.
July 31, 2026 — the official launch. ByteDance published “One-take Creation, Flexible Referencing: Introducing Seedance 2.5” on its Seed blog, dated Jul 31, 2026 on the index at seed.bytedance.com/en/blog, with a dedicated model page at seed.bytedance.com/en/seedance2_5 and a new card in the Seed model list. TechNode reported the same day that the model “is being rolled out to Jimeng AI and the Pro version of Doubao, while an API is expected to arrive soon on Volcano Engine’s Ark platform”. The consumer side opened first; the developer side followed a week later, and through Runway rather than BytePlus.
The API gap we carried from July closed in the first week of August, and it closed from two directions. On August 7, 2026 Runway’s API changelog announced, verbatim: “Seedance 2.5 (seedance2_5) is now available via the Runway API” — a third-party platform, but a real callable model ID. On the same date ByteDance’s own surfaces moved: on our August 8, 2026 read the BytePlus model catalog at ai.byteplus.com/en/model carries a “Dreamina Seedance 2.5” card described as “Longer storytelling, richer references” and stamped “Updated Aug 7, 2026”, alongside Dreamina Seedance 2.0 (updated Jun 22, 2026), 2.0 mini and 2.0 fast; the ModelArk documentation navigation now lists a “Dreamina Seedance 2.5 tutorial” page at docs.byteplus.com/en/docs/ModelArk/2607688. Both BytePlus surfaces render client-side and returned no model ID string to our automated fetch, so what we can state is that the model now exists in BytePlus’s own catalog — not what to call it. Two days earlier, on our August 6, 2026 read, that catalog listed only Dreamina Seedance 2.0, 2.0 mini, 2.0 fast and ByteDance Seedance 1.5 pro, with no 2.5 card at all. Third-party API resellers publish a Seedance 2.5 model ID (dreamina-seedance-2-5-260628) and quote token prices for it; that string still appears on reseller sites rather than on any BytePlus page we could load, so we are not presenting it as an official first-party model ID. Earlier TechTimes reporting dated July 16, 2026 claimed BytePlus API access had already opened — that claim has never matched the official documentation either. Our Seedance version timeline tracks that documentation gap version by version, alongside the current status of 1.0, 1.5 and the 2.0 family.
What’s New in Seedance 2.5
The specs below combine ByteDance’s official Seedance 2.5 product page on Dreamina (dreamina.capcut.com, data checked 2026-07-17, re-read 2026-08-06) with the Seed model page, launch coverage from the June 23 preview, and ByteDance’s August 3, 2026 press release. One thing to note about sourcing, because the official surfaces are not uniform:
- The 30-second and 180-second figures sit in one sentence on the Dreamina product page. On our August 6, 2026 read that page states creators can make “30-second videos in standard mode or extend them to 180 seconds with the beta long-video mode” — so the two lengths, and the “beta” label on the longer one, are all first-party from the same surface. ByteDance’s press release (PR Newswire, dateline LOS ANGELES, Aug. 3, 2026; read 2026-08-04) puts the same ceiling in round numbers: “For projects that require more time, Long Video Mode supports videos of up to three minutes.” The press release does not repeat the beta qualifier, so we keep Dreamina’s.
- The 4K figure still rests on one surface. ByteDance’s own model-team page at
seed.bytedance.com/en/seedance2_5describes the model but states no resolution at all (re-read 2026-08-06), TechNode’s launch coverage gives none, and the August 3 press release mentions no resolution either. 4K comes from the Dreamina product page alone, so we attribute it to Dreamina rather than presenting it as a launch-day spec. - The Seed model page and the Dreamina page describe different amounts of the model. The Seed page, re-read 2026-08-06, states only the length behaviour — “Create videos up to 30 seconds in a single generation, with the option to extend twice for richer, more complete storytelling” — plus editing capabilities, and lists no reference count, resolution or language set. Those come from Dreamina. We cite each spec to the page that carries it instead of merging them into one official-sounding spec sheet.
| Capability | Seedance 2.5 | Seedance 2.0 (for context) |
|---|---|---|
| Max clip length (single pass) | 30 seconds native, extendable twice (Seed model page, re-read 2026-08-06); 180 seconds in the “beta long-video mode” per the Dreamina product page (2026-08-06), which the Aug 3, 2026 press release renders as “up to three minutes” | 4–15 seconds |
| Reference inputs | Up to 50 multimodal inputs (Dreamina page, re-read 2026-08-06); TechNode’s July 31, 2026 launch report breaks that down as “up to 30 images, 10 videos and 10 audio clips” in one input | Up to 12 files |
| Resolution | “Clean 4K video output” per the Dreamina product page (re-read 2026-08-06); the Seed model page states no resolution | Native 2K at launch; upgraded to native 4K on June 23, 2026 |
| Color depth | 10-bit, per launch coverage (not listed on the official product page; some coverage may conflate this with the 2.0 upgrade announced the same day) | 10-bit after the June 23, 2026 upgrade, per The Decoder |
| Local editing | Edit only the parts that need adjustment while preserving “lighting, composition, motion, audio, and timeline continuity” (official page) | Full regeneration required |
| Reference-to-video | R2V control using green-screen footage or white-model references (official page) | All-Round Reference mode |
| Languages | 11 on the Dreamina page (2026-08-06): Chinese, English, Spanish, Indonesian, Malay, Thai, Arabic, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Japanese, Korean | 8+ with lip-sync |
The 30-second native generation is the headline. Until now, major models topped out at 25 seconds or less per clip — Seedance 2.0 itself capped at 15 seconds, Sora 2 at 25 — forcing creators to stitch segments and fight character drift and lighting shifts between cuts. A native 30-second pass with scene changes inside a single generation removes that stitching problem entirely, which is exactly the pain point our multi-shot storytelling guide exists to work around.
The jump from 12 to 50 reference inputs is the quieter but arguably bigger change for production teams: it means an entire project’s character sheets, style boards, motion clips, and audio stems can ride along in one generation.
Who It Affects
Consumer creators got access first — on published conditions. The Dreamina product page still reads “New model LIVE: Dreamina Seedance 2.5 is now available” on our August 6, 2026 check, and ByteDance’s own launch post states first-hand: “Today, Seedance 2.5 is rolling out on Jimeng AI, Doubao Pro, and other platforms, with API access coming soon via BytePlus ModelArk.” That is the reverse of the order we expected in July.
The consumer rollout is not unconditional. ByteDance’s Dreamina launch page at dreamina.capcut.com/resource/seedance-2-5-launch (page date Jul 31, 2026; read by us on 2026-08-03) states, verbatim: “Dreamina Seedance 2.5 will start rolling out in the coming week for subscriber accounts belonging to people over 16 years old across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and South America.” Three published conditions, then — a subscriber account, an age of over 16, and one of those four named regions — plus a phased rollout that, as announced on July 31, 2026, was to begin “in the coming week”. North America is not among the four regions that page names; ByteDance did not write that North America is excluded, only that it is not on the list, and we have not tested access from any region.
API developers now have a route — through Runway first. Runway’s API changelog entry dated August 7, 2026 states, verbatim: “Seedance 2.5 (seedance2_5) is now available via the Runway API”, and documents what you get: text, image or video input to video output with optional generated audio, durations of 4–30 seconds, 480p or 720p, billed at 30 credits per second at 720p and 20 credits per second at 480p (read 2026-08-08). Two things follow. First, the 30-second single-pass length is callable today, which is the reason API teams were watching this release at all. Second, Runway caps output at 720p — the 4K figure Dreamina advertises on the consumer surface is not what this route delivers. On ByteDance’s own side the position has moved but is not finished: the BytePlus model catalog now carries a Dreamina Seedance 2.5 card stamped “Updated Aug 7, 2026” and the ModelArk docs navigation now lists a Seedance 2.5 tutorial page, but no model ID rendered to our fetch on August 8, 2026, and ByteDance’s launch post still says only that API access is “coming soon via BytePlus ModelArk” (read 2026-08-03). TechNode adds that an API is “expected to arrive soon” on Volcano Engine’s Ark platform, the China-side cloud. High-volume pipelines that currently stitch 10-second Seedance 2.0 clips can collapse multi-segment jobs into single Runway calls now, or wait for a first-party BytePlus model ID and its per-token rates.
Existing Seedance 2.0 users got a free upgrade. Native 4K and 10-bit color came to 2.0 at the June 23 event. Our Seedance 2.0 complete guide and pricing review were written against the 2K-era specs; treat “up to 2K” statements there as superseded until we finish updating them.
Third-party platforms are in transition. Aggregators such as Pollo AI list Seedance 2.5 release trackers, and API resellers now advertise a Seedance 2.5 model ID with token pricing, but none of that is confirmable against BytePlus’s own catalog. Our automated August 6, 2026 re-check of the Pollo and Kie.ai model pages was blocked (both returned HTTP 403 to our fetch), so we have no fresh reading of their live status either way. Runway is now the exception: its own API changelog entry dated August 7, 2026 states “Seedance 2.5 (seedance2_5) is now available via the Runway API”, which is a platform documenting its own service rather than a tracker guessing at someone else’s. Treat other third-party “2.5 access” claims with caution until the platform documents them itself.
How to Access Seedance 2.5 & Pricing (API status re-checked 2026-08-08; access and pricing pages 2026-08-06)
Access routes as of August 8, 2026 (API lines re-checked that day; the Dreamina and China-domestic lines last checked August 6, 2026):
- Dreamina web app — open, on published conditions. The official product page at dreamina.capcut.com/seedance/seedance-2-5 carries the banner “New model LIVE: Dreamina Seedance 2.5 is now available”, replacing the “coming soon” wording it showed through July 31. ByteDance’s separate launch page at dreamina.capcut.com/resource/seedance-2-5-launch (page date Jul 31, 2026; read 2026-08-03) states: “Dreamina Seedance 2.5 will start rolling out in the coming week for subscriber accounts belonging to people over 16 years old across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and South America.” That is a subscriber account, an age of over 16, and one of those four named regions. North America is not among the four named; the page does not state that it is excluded.
- Jimeng AI and Doubao Pro (China-domestic) — rolling out, per TechNode’s July 31, 2026 report. We have not verified reachability from outside China.
- BytePlus ModelArk API (international, first-party) — listed, but not yet documented in a form you can call. On our August 8, 2026 check the BytePlus model catalog at
ai.byteplus.com/en/modelcarries a “Dreamina Seedance 2.5” card (“Longer storytelling, richer references”, stamped “Updated Aug 7, 2026”) and the ModelArk documentation navigation lists a “Dreamina Seedance 2.5 tutorial” atdocs.byteplus.com/en/docs/ModelArk/2607688— both new since our August 6, 2026 check, when neither existed. Neither page rendered a model ID or a rate card to our fetch, so we cannot hand you a string to call. ByteDance’s launch post still reads “with API access coming soon via BytePlus ModelArk” (read 2026-08-03). Official docs: docs.byteplus.com.
- Volcano Engine Ark (China) — an API is “expected to arrive soon”, per the same TechNode report. No date given.
- Runway API (third party, international) — open since August 7, 2026. Runway’s API changelog states, verbatim: “Seedance 2.5 (
seedance2_5) is now available via the Runway API”, listing text, image or video input, optional generated audio, durations of 4–30 seconds, 480p or 720p output, and pricing of 30 credits per second at 720p and 20 credits per second at 480p (read 2026-08-08). This is a third-party layer, not a ByteDance surface: you are billed in Runway credits under Runway’s plans, and 4K is not on the menu.
On pricing, one first-party number now exists — and it is narrower than it looks. ByteDance’s press release (PR Newswire, dateline LOS ANGELES, Aug. 3, 2026; read 2026-08-04) prints a two-column table headed “Pricing item | Launch offer” whose first row reads “Seedance 2.5: From $0.097 per second”, with “Seedance 2.0: From $0.066 per second” below it. The same table names the eligible users as “New subscribers purchasing a qualifying annual membership”, and the release adds that Dreamina “is offering access to Seedance 2.5 through eligible subscription plans, with limited-time launch pricing available to qualifying users” and that “Prices, model access and promotional eligibility may vary by subscription plan and region.”
So: it is a limited-time promotional rate on an annual consumer subscription for new subscribers, it is a “From” price whose starting conditions the release never explains, and it is not an API rate — the release does not mention API availability or API pricing at all. Do not compare $0.097 against another vendor’s per-second API rate; they are not the same unit.
That number is also still the only one on a ByteDance-issued surface. On our August 6, 2026 check, the public Dreamina pricing page names no plan tiers, no credit allowances and no per-second rate at all — it says only that “Dreamina provides free daily credits for generating images and videos” and pushes you to log in, so the $0.097 figure cannot be re-verified against a published rate card six days after launch. BytePlus now lists a Dreamina Seedance 2.5 model in its catalog (stamped “Updated Aug 7, 2026”, read 2026-08-08) but published no rate card for it that we could read. The one developer-side price now published belongs to a third party: Runway bills Seedance 2.5 at 30 credits per second at 720p and 20 credits per second at 480p (Runway API changelog, August 7, 2026; read 2026-08-08) — credits under Runway’s own plans, not a ByteDance rate. Third-party API resellers do quote numbers — one reseller lists the model ID dreamina-seedance-2-5-260628 at $6.40 and $10.70 per million tokens for different input types, and API trackers estimate roughly $0.66–$1.80 per 30-second clip at lower resolutions and $15 or more for a 30-second 4K generation. Those are reseller and tracker figures for an API that ByteDance has not opened; treat them as third-party estimates, not prices you can budget against. For grounded numbers you can act on today, our Seedance 2.0 pricing review covers the current Dreamina and API cost structure.
The Copyright Question (Third-Party Reporting)
One thread worth knowing about before you build on Seedance 2.5 commercially: TechTimes reported on July 16, 2026 that Hollywood copyright disputes originating with Seedance 2.0 remain unresolved. (That same report described a 2.5 API as live, which the official BytePlus documentation has never shown — we cite it here only for the copyright thread.) The same reporting notes ByteDance added C2PA provenance watermarks, face-blocking filters, and copyrighted-character detection after pausing Seedance 2.0’s global rollout in March 2026. This is third-party reporting, not something we can independently verify — but if your use case involves recognizable characters or likenesses, read the terms carefully before committing production work.
First Impressions & What We’ll Test Next
Hands-on results: to be updated. We have not run Seedance 2.5 ourselves yet — the Runway API route only opened on August 7, 2026, and we have not tested the Dreamina route that opened on July 31, 2026 — and we will not pass off ByteDance’s demo reels as our own testing. Here is what we will run:
- 30-second single-pass stress test — one continuous prompt with two scene changes; check character and lighting consistency against a stitched Seedance 2.0 baseline.
- Reference-count scaling — same scene at 5, 20, and 50 reference inputs; measure adherence gains and generation time.
- Local editing — regenerate one object in a finished clip and verify the claimed motion and audio continuity survives.
- Real cost per clip — actual billed cost for 1080p and 4K 30-second generations versus the third-party estimates above.
We will also update our Seedance 2 vs Sora 2 comparison once 2.5 output can be compared directly — a native 30-second clip changes that matchup materially.
